Hymn 264     Nothing But the Blood

Prayer

Lord’s Prayer

Scripture Reading  – James 5:14-18closeJames 5:14-18 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 1. We need people who ______ __________ to pray with us when we’re sick. Verse 14.

  1. We need to remember that prayer is a _____ ___________. Verse 15a and 16b-18

One pastor said, “All I know is that when I pray, things happen, and when I don’t, they ___________.”

III. We need to know that sin can be forgiven. Verse 15b

  1. The sickness _________ be a result of sin.
  2. Sin may be the ______________ to the sickness.

  1. We need to be ____________ with each other and pray for each other. Verse 16

The power of sin is broken (not eliminated) in an _____________ community of Christ followers.

Roger Olson asks the question –  What does community necessarily entail?

Three things at least:

  1. ______________ – I will be there when you are hurting
  2. _______________- I will let you speak truth into my life, even when I don’t like it.
  3. _________________ – I will be honest about my struggles.

The beauty of the gospel is that it allows us to be perfectly honest about the ugliest parts of us without it destroying us. Why? Because we’ve been forgiven. It also does not leave us there but enables us through the love and power of God in Christ, to become more beautiful, in word, thought and deed. In a word we are “______________”.

It causes us to see our past without regret and enlightens our hope of what we can still be!
