Thank God He is Jealous

Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? (ESV) closeJames 4:4-5closeJames 4:4-5 You adulterous people! 3 Questions we might Ask

> What Did You Just Call Me?  Verse 4

The metaphor of __________

In Isaiah 58closeIsaiah 58 True and False Fasting 58:1 “Cry aloud; do not hold back;
lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they seek me daily
and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that did righteousness
and did not forsake the judgment of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments;
they delight to draw near to God.
‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
and oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
will not make your voice to be heard on high.
Is such the fast that I choose,
a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.
11 And the Lord will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in. 13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (ESV)

 “For your __________ is your Maker”

You can’t be married to both God and the World.

> What does he mean by the world?

Three different meanings.

  1. It sometimes means the _____ world, the earth – (Acts 17:24closeActs 17:24 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, (ESV) closeActs 17:24closeActs 17:24 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, (ESV) 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, (ESV) ).
  2. It also means the ____________ world, mankind: John 3:16closeJohn 3:16 For God So Loved the World 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV) closeJohn 3:16closeJohn 3:16 For God So Loved the World 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV) For God So Loved the World 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV) loving the world of nature and the world of men.
  3. This “world” is an invisible spiritual __________ opposed to God and Christ.

(Eph. 2:1closeEphesians 2:1 By Grace Through Faith 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins (ESV) closeEphesians 2:1closeEphesians 2:1 By Grace Through Faith 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins (ESV) By Grace Through Faith 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins (ESV) –2)- “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience”

“I desire that, I really want that, ___________ what I got”

> How Could God be _________?  – verse 5

The Holy Spirit who lives within you is jealous for you. God is a Jealous God.

Two kinds of jealousy.

One evil – you have what I want and I hate you because you have it and I don’t.

Good one – JI Packer – “a _________ to protect a loving relationship and a desire to avenge it when broken.”

So here’s the question – Have you ever __________ God for His jealousy for you?

Be thankful for God’s jealousy and use it as a ___________ to be more faithful to Him.

Scripture Reading—  1 John 2:15-17close1 John 2:15-17 Do Not Love the World 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
